I was able to go to Newport, Rhode Island last week for a few days for work. I think it's only been a few posts since the last time that I declared my love for my job. So I'm due.
I really love New England anyway, and it's been the one major hole in my work travel, so I was really excited to get this one. Newport is only about four or five hours from my house, so I drove and brought along Julie and the puppy for some seaside town fun.
There's not really a whole lot there, sightseeing wise. The great thing about New England is more the smells and the ocean and the culture. And Newport is a very New England town. I don't like seafood, but I do like the way it smells. At least, I like the way it smells when in a seaside town. Weird right? I think it's all that good salty fresh air.
Well I was born and raised in Massachusetts by a descendant of Portugese fishermen, stowaways, and Boston horsetheives, and I worked in an Alaskan fishing town for two salmon seasons so perhaps it's the smell of nostalgia for me. But Julie has a thing for lobster so we were able to satisfy both of our seafood kinks quite well.
Newport is actually a very rich town though, with a ton of mansions. It's kind of crazy. I didn't take pictures because, as beautiful as the architecture of the Rich can be, something inside of me is a bit snobby and offensive when it comes to the idea of photographing anything that musty old American money thinks of as important. I think it's the jealousy. It's a hang-up, I'm aware of it. But there was a big fancy annual boat show in town the weekend we were there, and I managed to get a picture of that, at least.
